Bridge to Dreams Program reconnects long term care resident to his love of hockey

Avid Hockey Fan & Birchwood Terrace Resident, Joe Hunter, Attends North American First Nations Hockey Tournament

(Cambridge, ON – April 19, 2018)  Formerly known on the street as “Hockey Joe” due to his love for the sport, Birchwood Terrace resident and First Nations member Joe Hunter was excited to attend the North American First Nations Hockey Tournament in Kenora over the Easter long weekend thanks to a resident-centred program being implemented at Birchwood Terrace.

From a young age, Joe enjoyed playing hockey and can often be found watching hockey games in the television lounge at Birchwood Terrace.  Knowing his love for the game, staff and volunteers at Birchwood Terrace were excited to help “Hockey Joe” enjoy the sport live at the North American First Nations Hockey Tournament and receive a hockey jersey.  Operated by Southbridge Care Homes, Birchwood Terrace is implementing Bridge to Dreams, a resident-centered initiative developed by Southbridge Care Homes in partnership with the home.

“We are grateful to the staff and volunteers at the home who take the time to listen to what’s important to each of our residents and try to find opportunities to connect the two.  The Bridge to Dreams program is a purposeful way for us to honour our residents in a sustainable and meaningful way,” remarked Keith McIntosh, Chief Executive Officer of Southbridge Care Homes.

Birchwood Terrace is a fully accredited long term care home providing care to 96 residents in Kenora.   For more information on Birchwood Terrace, please visit www.birchwoodterrace.ca.
