HCPT offers the Personal Support Worker Distance Education (DE) Hybrid Program based on the National Association of Career Colleges (NACC) 2022 curriculum.

Career Act 2005 of Ontario

Academic Requirements

  1. Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), and ENG 4C or ENG 4U with Transcript OR
  2. Equivalent: Foreign credentials must be translated in English and assessed for Grade 12 equivalency by a recognized organization such as WES (World Education Service)
  3. Mature Student with a score of 11 or more on the Wonderlic SLE. Mature student status may be granted to applicants who are over 19 years old and do not have a high school diploma or GED.

English Language Proficiency

If English is not a student’s first language, they must provide proof of English competency. This must be demonstrated through one of the following options:

  1. IELTS – International English Language Testing Services – Minimum average score of 6.0 with no subject test score lower than 5.5.
  2. TOEFL –Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet based test (IBT) –overall 80, with the minimum of each component: Reading 20; Listening 20; Speaking 20; Writing 20.
  3. CAEL – Overall 60 with no section below 60.
  4. NACC Literacy Test

Medical Report

  • All students must be provided with a Medical Report upon enrollment for completion by their medical practitioner. The completed Medical Report must be completed and returned to the college within at least 45 days of the commencement of study.

Vulnerable Sector Screening

  • Students must obtain and submit a current clear Canada wide Police Clearance of Criminal Record with Vulnerable Sector screening, within 45 days of commencement of study.

Total Program length = 700 hours, Total of 25 weeks

CPR and First Aid is additional. The student must complete Level C Basic Rescuer and Standard First Aid Prior to commencing any placement hours.

  1. The Program is an instructor-led curriculum delivery for all theory, practical (supervised) labs, and testing.
  2. All theory content is delivered online synchronously by qualified instructors via Zoom.
  3. The NACC PSW Final Exam will be available through the NACC online exam portal and can be supervised in-person at the LTC Home.
  4. All Skills Labs will be supervised and evaluated in-person with the college instructor at the LTC placement location (Living Classroom) using the required equipment.
  1. The Instructor will be on site for the first 100 hours of the 200 hr long-term care clinical placement and available by phone and email for the remainder of the long-term care placement hours
  2. The students will have a 100hr placement in a retirement setting under the supervision of a preceptor. The instructor will be available by phone and email at all times.
  3. All students will have a PSW Passbook to guide both clinical placements

Theory – synchronous online Labs– Onsite at LTC Home (Living Classroom)

  • 400hrs
  • 28hrs/week
  • Total 14 weeks

Days and Times: Mondays to Fridays -0900 – 1500, Onsite Lab days will be pre-determined
Clinical Placements are scheduled for Day and Evening shifts only, weekends may be included

Long-term Care Placement (Full Time)

  • 200hrs
  • 40hrs/week
  • Total 5 weeks

Retirement Placement (Full Time)

  • 100hrs
  • 40hrs/week
  • Total 2.5 weeks

Once the student successfully completes all modules, tests, performance demonstrations and both practical placements they will be able to write the NACC final exam.

Upon successful completion students will be awarded the Personal Support Worker Certificate from HCPT College as well as a certificate and pin from NACC.
