BE EPIC Program designed to help PSWs feel more comfortable in the care they provide and ultimately stay in this high demand profession longer
LONDON, March 2, 2020 – Chelsey Park recently played host to an important training initiative from the Future Skills Centre to help recruit and maintain Personal Support Workers.
The BE EPIC program from the Future Skills Centre is designed to help Personal Support Workers feel more comfortable in the care they provide and ultimately stay in this high demand profession longer.
At its core, the Be EPIC program teaches ‘person-centered communication’ in which the caregiver gets to know their client’s life history and incorporates that knowledge into their conversations as they build a relationship while going about tasks like bathing, dressing and feeding.
Chelsey Park participated in real life 1:1 situations presented through a scenario-based activity involving the home’s Personal Support Workers and actors. All 9 full-time, mid-career Personal Support Worker participants felt that the training provided them with many new communication techniques to assist with caring for people living with Dementia.
It is hoped that the training provided through vignettes with simulated persons with Dementia will make the occupation more attractive to mid-career workers transitioning to the job as the economy changes.
