October 17, 2019 – Southbridge Lakehead residents dancing to Canada’s National Ballet
A unique partnership between Southbridge Lakehead in Thunder Bay and Canada’s National Ballet School (NBS) has residents dancing to the beat.
Developed by NBS, Sharing Dance Seniors is a weekly, 45-minute dance class taught entirely from a seated position. The class incorporates a variety of musical and dance styles and is taught from NBS in Toronto, delivered live via video streaming. Southbridge Lakehead residents participating in the class exercise, socialize and have fun. The accessible dance program was developed to engage older adults in meaningful dance activity that benefits physical, cognitive and overall health.

“Participating in Sharing Dace Seniors truly changed my life,” said Ruthie, a Sharing Dance Seniors participant. “It helped me physically do things I haven’t [been able] to do for more than 50 years.”
An instructor from NBS teaches the class, aiming to support overall physical, emotional and social wellbeing through dance encouragement. Through the eight-week program, Southbridge Lakehead residents build and develop skill and confidence in dance movement.
“The participants absolutely love it,” said Natalie, an onsite instructor. “[They] can’t wait for next week – the infectious smiles and joy on the participants’ faces were wonderful.”

Southbridge Lakehead is a 131-resident long-term care home located near Lake Superior in Thunder Bay.
