Robert Nathaniel (aka Nate) is originally from Trinidad. He boasts of the countries delicious cuisine and talent that exists among the many Trinidadians who can play the steel pan drums. Nate can play the steel plan drums and often does for his fellow co-residents that reside at his home of Parisien Manor in Cornwall, ON. Nate has even produced his music.
Nate wished he could once again taste the cuisine of his homeland. As a matter of chance, a local organization was hosting an event whereby a five course Caribbean meal was being served.
Johanne Wensink, the Director of Care for Parisien Manor reached out to the organizer of the event to obtain meal tickets. The organizers were happy to hear that Nate would be attending the event with the Director of Care and Nate’s son. They were even more thrilled when they heard that Nate played the steel pan drums and might be inclined to play for the audience.
Nate was very pleased with the quality of the food which was graciously donated by the restaurant. In return, Nate played his very own set of steel pan drums for an audience of approximately 60 guests. Everyone enjoyed listening to his beautiful drum and showered him with applause. Nate also met the Mayor of Cornwall, Bernadette Clement, who told Nate that her father was also from Trinidad, and that they shared much in common.
This Dream grew from being a simple desire to connect with Nate’s roots through food to the opportunity for Nate to show off his skilled drum playing which earned him recognition, praise, and most of all, an elated sense of dignity and belonging to the community of Cornwall, ON that has become his home.
